Dreaming

Get started on your journey to turning your dreams into reality by following this first step in my 7 Steps to Success : Dreaming. What does dreaming entail? Where does one start? What are the guidelines? Should I be dreaming of that...?

Dreaming used to come naturally when we were children? Grown-ups would often ask the question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and answers would be uninhibited like Astronaut, Bus Driver, Fireman or Fighter Pilot. Some of us were lucky to be supported to chase those dreams and fulfill them. Others succumbed to society's pressure, became what they "should" have become and ended up in a job where they were working the best years of their lives towards someone else's dreams, waiting for the magic age when society says they must retire.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when taking time out to dream...

How do I want my LIFE to be? What do I want to HAVE? What do I want to DO? What do I want to BE?

When answering these questions, ensure that you are honest with yourself, that what you come up with is what YOU want, and not what someone else thinks you should want.

Here are some ideas to get you going:

1. Immortality + Eternal Youth

Do you really want to live forever? Physically this doesn't seem very realistic, unless there are any Highlanders or Vampires out there who would like to prove me wrong... (Be careful of wishing for Immortality without eternal youth....)

As for a legacy, there is often a strong desire in people to make a difference and be remembered. As long as people remember you, or you have had an influence on them, a part of you lives on in them. This is especially true for family. The desire for a family  and procreation can be linked to the desire for immortality. While you might not live forever, a part of you lives on in your offspring and the people you have inspired throughout your life.

2. Wealth

Some people feel bad about wanting money. There is an idea out there that money corrupts and turns us into bad people. Bob Proctor states in his book, Its not about the money, that money can't change the essence of who you are. What it does is amplify your ability to live to your highest values.  Its OK to want lots of money, but wealth can also refer to an abundance of other things. What do you want to do with the abundance you desire?

3. Travel

What places in the world would you love to see? What is it about the travel that you desire? Do you want to travel in luxury? Do you want to see ancient places and learn about where we came from? Do you simply have a strong desire to see beautiful things? Where in the world do you want to go? Fathom has put together a list of their top 24 Travel Blogs and Websites for 2014 which is a useful resource for some inspiration.

4. Happiness

What really makes you happy? This can be linked to almost any of the other desires. Think of a time where you felt the most happy.  What were you doing? Who were you with?  What was it about this time that made you really Happy?

5. Love

For some people, the thing they want most is love. Are you looking for the feeling of being in love, where the sky seems bluer, the trees seem greener and everything in the world is amazing, that feeling where your chest feels like it is going to explode? Or are you looking for long term companionship, someone to share your life with?  Could it be the unconditional love that comes from Family?

If you are looking to for someone, think of how you want that person to be? Think of the values of that person, how they look and what they believe in.

6. Health

How do you want you health to be? Some would like to be fitter, some want to give up a habit like smoking. No matter how you are at the moment, imagine your ideal health situation. Think of what you will do in your ideal healthy state. Where will you go? What  will you do? How will you feel? Allow your mind to run free without limitation and then reflect on how much better you feel already.

7. Independence

This is a big one for me. Its one of the main reasons for engaging in this project. It probably ties into number 2 (Wealth), yet its slightly different because a high paying job can give you lots of money, but leaves you dependent on your employer. What will you do with your independence?  Which of the other dreams will you be able to fulfill with independence?

8. Fame

What is it about fame that people seek?  For me it's the capacity to reach huge numbers of people, inspire them and make a difference in their lives.

What does fame mean to you?  How does it Look?  Do people recognize you on the street or are you on a stage in front of a huge crowd,  perhaps in a stadium that's packed to capacity.

For a more comprehensive list of ideas to spark your dreaming, check out 57 Things Other People Want From Life. I found that most of the items listed fitted into one or more of the categories listed above.

Look at the list and let your mind wander to your own personal ideal life. Check with yourself if this is really your dream? Picture it in vivid detail. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? What emotions are you experiencing? How does it feel to have life exactly the way you want it?

If you have followed this process, you are already on your way to making it reality. Parts of your subconscious are already working to figure out how to make it happen.

The key now is to move on to the next step in My 7 Steps to Success, Adding Value, to ensure that you engage those parts of your subconscious. Without taking positive steps to discover the importance of this dream to YOU in fulfilling your purpose in life, and without designing a plan, you could get stuck in the dream.

Following the steps will ensure that your subconscious shows you the way to turning this Dream into Reality.
